9 Songs
69 minutes, 2005, UK
directed by Michael Winterbottom
starring Kieran O'Brien, Margo Stilley
out of 5 stars we give this film...
This was the worst film I saw at Park City. I expected so much more coming from Michael Winterbottom, the man who brought you Code 49 and 24 Hour Party People. All this film was, was porn...with 9 songs in it. It follows a couple who fuck every which way, have problems, fuck some more, and go to the same venue time after time and listen to music between fucking. You probably think I'm exaggerating, but no. And the fucking is pornographic, too. Yes, it shows actually dick-sucking, pussy-eating, ejaculation, and penetration. The cinematography is purposely dark, but this adds no authenticity to it. It looks like shit. There are no creative shots or editing techniques. The movie's just under 70 minutes long but feels like forever. This is the problem when a successful director decides to go digital, i.e. Steven Soderbergh's Full Frontal
...they make the worst movie ever.
Maybe if you're in a dark room all by yourself, Winterbottom's film may be of use to you. But unless you're looking to pull a Pee-Wee Herman, this film is not worth any theatre time.
